Stack Your Dining Rewards: Credit Card + Loyalty + Portals
Your credit card is only one layer of dining rewards. By stacking a dining portal, your highest-earning card, and a restaurant loyalty program, you can earn 10-15% total return on a single meal. Here is how.
The Three Layers of Stacking
Dining Portal (1-10%)
Start by going through a dining portal before you eat. Chase Dining, Rakuten, and Seated offer 1-10% back at participating restaurants. This stacks on top of whatever your credit card earns.
Credit Card (3-7%)
Pay with your highest-earning dining card. Amex Gold at 7.2% effective, Chase Sapphire at 5.1%, or SavorOne at 3%. This is the biggest layer and the one you control by choosing the right card.
Restaurant Loyalty (5-15%)
Scan your loyalty card or use the restaurant app. Starbucks Rewards, Chipotle Rewards, and Chick-fil-A One give 5-15% back in free items. This is free money on top of your card rewards.
Real Stacking Example: 11% Back on a $100 Dinner

Dining Portals Deep Dive
Chase Dining (through Chase app)
Offers 1-5% back at participating restaurants when you link your Chase card and book through the dining portal. Available to all Chase cardholders. Works at over 50,000 restaurants nationwide.
Rakuten Dining
Rakuten offers cash back at select restaurants when you link your card. Rates vary by restaurant (1-10%). Works with any credit card, so it stacks with your Amex Gold or Sapphire rewards.
Resy (Amex exclusive)
Resy is a reservation platform owned by American Express. Amex cardholders get access to exclusive reservations, special dining events, and sometimes Amex Offers for bonus points at Resy partner restaurants. No direct cash back, but the access alone is valuable.
OpenTable
Earn 100-1,000 OpenTable points per reservation (100 pts = $1). Some restaurants offer bonus points for off-peak reservations. Points expire after 12 months of inactivity. Easy to stack since you book the reservation through OpenTable but pay with whatever card you want.

FAQ
Can I really earn 10%+ back on dining?
Yes. A dining portal (3%) + Amex Gold (7.2% effective) already gets you over 10%. Add a restaurant loyalty program and you can exceed 15% on certain transactions. The key is stacking multiple independent reward sources on the same purchase, which is completely legitimate.
Do dining portals work with any credit card?
Most dining portals (Rakuten, Seated) work with any card. Chase Dining requires a Chase card. Resy is Amex-exclusive for special benefits. The portal reward and the credit card reward are separate systems, so they always stack.
Is it worth joining restaurant loyalty programs?
Absolutely, especially for places you visit regularly. Starbucks Rewards, Chipotle Rewards, and Chick-fil-A One are all free to join and give 5-15% back in free items. It takes 30 seconds to scan the app before paying. There is no downside.
